Fun twist on a classic

As I suspected it would be, the Sage 6 is just as solid as the Sage 5. The button operated compression lock works well and the fit in finish is perfect. S90V is icing on the cake. Glad to have it in the collection.

Shipping was fast and communication was excellent. Thanks.

What you expect…but with even better action

Excellent knife, great action, real carbon fiber, s90v, what’s not to like?

Logical well executed next iteration

Quick note: Zen’s communication, product packaging, extra gifts and handwritten touch is very much appreciated! First class! As for the knife, if you are familiar with the lock on the smock knife and any of the previous iterations of the Sage, you pretty much know what to expect here. The ergos on this knife are exactly as expected. So easy to handle and fidget with. If there is any criticism - but don’t interpret this as a negative - is I’d prefer a different upgraded all carbon scale rather than the same ol’ same ol’. Also unlike on the smock, it’s not easy to deploy the blade by compressing the button. Really a satisfying knife that will be my EDC for some time to come!

My new edc

I’ve got hinderers and Chris reeves but all I want to do is carry this perfect little machine

This special, limited edition configuration of the Sage 6 features a S90V blade and full carbon fiber as opposed to the S30V version's composite G10/CF scales.

The Sage Family

The Sage series is one of Spyderco’s most well-regarded and popular models, for good reason. Originally released in 2008 as Spyderco's 123rd model of folder, the series showcases different locking mechanisms. The order of locks from Sage 1-6 are as follows: liner, frame (titanium), bolt action, mid-back lock, compression, and button-release compression. Also notable about this series is that approximately 5% of Sage sales are donated to the National Alzheimer’s Foundation.

The Sage 5 in particular has been so successful for Spyderco that it has spawned several variations with a myriad of steel options, such as but not limited to: S30V, Maxamet, SPY27, Magnacut, and Rex 121.

Button Release Compression Lock

While it may appear that this knife features a "button" lock, there is actually more than meets the eye. The conventional "button" lock is technically referred to as a Plunge Lock, which is a relatively simple mechanism, as illustrated below by Knafs.

Instead of the Plunge Lock, the Sage 6 features a Button Release Compression Lock (BRCL), which was pioneered by Kevin Smock on his SK23 custom models and the eponymous Spyderco Smock (C240). The BRCL is a much stronger lock than the Plunge while equally easy to use. Essentially, the Button Release part means that the lock-side liner is on the opposite side (to what would be considered a "lefty" configuration) and a button is added to the lockbar for easier actuation. This way, you still get all the same strength and reliability you have come to love with the compression lock while enjoying the fidget factor and ease of operation of a button release. In our opinion, the compression lock is also easier to maintain than Plunge when it comes to cleaning reassembly.

For reference, the below illustration from Knafs is how the conventional compression lock mechanism works, on the Para 3 specifically. The Taiwan-made models are constructed slightly differently than the USA-made ones, but the locking mechanism functions the same way.

If you are considering getting a knife for someone new to knives or someone who has long fingernails (as women often do), the intuitive lock, refined ergonomics, exceptional build quality, and friendly yet professional aesthetic makes the Sage 6 a very compelling choice.
