Story

The Lil’ Temperance™ Lightweight is a powerhouse cutting tool and the latest chapter in a long evolutionary history. Although rooted in Martial Blade Craft design, it provides reliable, full-service performance for any cutting task.

To elevate that performance even further, this expression of it features a blade crafted from Böhler-Uddeholm, K390 MICROCLEAN®, a state-of-the-art particle metallurgy tool steel formulated to withstand the rigors of the most demanding industrial applications. Full-flat ground from thick 4mm (0.157-inch) stock, the PlainEdge™ blade of this knife is supported by skeletonized stainless steel liners that form the foundation of its high-strength Compression Lock® mechanism.

The liners are nested within injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) scales that feature a Bi-Directional Texture™ pattern for a secure, non-slip grip. Molded in the signature blue color of Spyderco’s elite family of K390 knives, the scales are also home to a broad-based four-position clip that supports all possible carry preferences.

This model also comes with a more economical VG-10 blade steel option.

Notes

The Lil Temperance 3 is one of the most underrated models in Spyderco's lineup in my opinion. One of the interesting things about it is that the blade stock is a chunky 4mm (the fan favorites Shaman and PM2 have 3.7mm, for reference) so I like to describe this thing as a mini-Shaman. Unlike the Shaman though, there is a small thumb ramp and the edge goes all the way to the handle so there's no risk of snags and no "nub" to bump your finger when when closing the blade. Like the Shaman, it also features a compression lock, though the action is not quite as smooth as what you'd be used to with the USA models.

The handle ergos are also pretty good, as you would expect from Spyderco. It fills the hand quite well and the bi-directionally textured FRN scales provide excellent grip. Like the other models in the Temperance line, the LT3's scale features a dimple in the middle to serve as both a landing for the clip and an indexing point (to enhance muscle memory). Supporting the scales are nested steel liners, so it feels plenty rigid (notable if you feel like the Para 3 LW wasn't rigid enough, but the Sage 5 LW was).

This model is especially worth recommending in 2025 after the significant price drop that it saw earlier this year. The VG-10 version costs exactly half as much as the S30V Shaman does and the K390 version is still ~$100 less!
