Story

Like an animal’s claw, hawkbill blades pierce with the point and draw the material being cut into the natural curve of the edge. Spyderco’s Harpy® was the first knife to integrate the dynamics of the hawkbill profile with the voracious cutting power of our fully serrated SpyderEdge™. Also available in a PlainEdge™ configuration, its hollow-ground VG-10 stainless steel blade cuts with authority far beyond its size and is ideal for cutting netting, rope, cord, and webbing. Symmetrical and fully ambidextrous, the Harpy’s stainless steel handle features a sturdy back lock mechanism, a four-position clip, and a drying vent/shackle key. It has also been updated to screw-together construction to allow precise adjustment and easier maintenance.

Notes

As I heard Eric Glesser say an event, "Spyderco never re-releases the same knife once it's been discontinued". Fortunately, the new plain edged Harpy is able to follow the tradition without being a Sprint Run due to the CQI (Constant Quality Improvement) update of having a screw-together construction so now it's also user-serviceable!

Fun fact: the Spyderco C-SKU naming system is chronological starting from their first folder in 1981 - the C01 Worker. The C08 Harpy makes it the 8th model Spyderco designed and it was originally released in the 1987 according to spydiewiki.com.

The original plain edged C08 Harpy (and the FRN-handled Merlin) continues to be a coveted collectors item for hardcore fans of the old school Spydercos. In fact, I think the last steel-handled plain edged Harpy was discontinued before I was born! With this release, a whole new generation of Spyderco users can enjoy this timeless design!

Also, depending on your use cases, you'd be surprised how useful the hawksbill shape is. As an experiment to myself last year, I tried EDCing only a hawksbill for two weeks and it's really great for a lot of the same things that wharncliffes are good for since you won't get any "slippage" when cutting and the tip is extremely pronounced. I don't really see it being practical for food prep or bushcraft-type tasks, but for indoor uses, especially if you do precise work with things like paper on a cutting mat, it could be excellent!
